The Financial Guide to Working Overseas Book
The Financial Guide to Working Overseas: How to legally avoid tax, invest wisely, and build your career abroad as an expat
This book grew out of my work on the Financial Guide to Retiring Abroad and shares material with that book. I decided that my experience working overseas in Europe, the Middle East, and the United States gave me the basis for a book to help people who wished to work overseas, but were confused by the financial requirements to do so.
In this era of scarce jobs, a person who is willing and able to move to another country to make a living has a huge advantage over the competition. This book will give that person an even greater edge with my insight into making a successful career abroad, as well as explaining the right way to invest your money for a comfortable retirement.
If I knew what I know now about living overseas, I would have done things quite differently! I didn’t know where to put my money, and I didn’t know how to make the best of my career abroad. I’ve put down in The Financial Guide to Working Overseas all the lessons I’ve learned from the mistakes I’ve made. I’ve suffered, so you don’t have to!
Is the country you are moving to a stable country?
This book will tell you how to analyze the economic stability of the country you are moving to. I explain how you can look at the current price of credit default swaps of sovereign bonds to determine whether your country is likely to default in the near future. If the country you retire to defaults on its debt obligations, you might be in big trouble!
What to do if the country you are living collapses, has an economic meltdown, or a currency revaluation:
I tell you how to best protect yourself from a currency default (a common occurrence in the developing world), and how to prepare yourself against economic turmoil. It can happen anywhere, even Europe, as the events in Greece in 2010 attest. This is the only work overseas guide that will prepare you for such eventualities.
What are the safest investments and what should I invest in while overseas?
Whether you are extraordinarily wealthy, or just struggling to get by, I give you basic and simple investment advice backed by academic studies from leading economic institutions like the University of Chicago regarding where to put your money. Your retirement portfolio should be in index funds and kept in retirement accounts. Avoid dangerous investments, and under no circumstances invest heavily in the local economy. I explain why and how.
Working in a war zone
I discuss working in a war zone. In this era of seemingly endless war, many civilians have taken jobs in these violent parts of the world to take advantage of higher salaries. I explain the challenges of working in such an environment, and what precautions you should take if you decide to work in one. No other book on working overseas covers this subject!
Buying Real Estate
If you live overseas, you may want to buy a property to make into your home. It’s risky, but I explain how you can make it work. Buying a home isn’t for every expat, but for a few expats who will make a new country their long term home, it can be a good deal. I explain how.
Visas
I give you an overview of the various visas offered by countries around the world. There are many kinds, but they generally fall into only a few categories. I’ll give you the insight necessary to help you choose the right one!
Your career abroad
I explain the best strategies to find work, and how you should view your time overseas in terms of your career. Not every job out there is a good fit for an expat. Some are offered by companies that aren’t worth working for. I explain how to tell whether the employer who offers you the job is the one that is right for you.
ALL THIS AND MUCH MORE
Most books talk about working overseas from the standpoint of how exciting it is to work in a new and foreign culture. I’m writing from the standpoint that you are moving abroad to advance your career and increase your bottom line. Moving abroad to work is an enormous undertaking and a major financial decision. This book recognizes the difficulties and gives you my firsthand experience working abroad. A tough economy means making tough decisions. Working overseas is a tough decision. This book aims to make that decision just a little bit easier.
