Gay rights and Argentina

by Rick on July 15, 2010

In case you haven’t heard,  Argentina has legalized gay marriage. This makes Argentina the first Latin American country to legalize gay marriage at all (though other Latin American countries have legalized civil unions). The new law makes Argentina the leader in Latin America in the area of gay rights.

Why am I writing about this? Gay men and women who are considering moving abroad for work or retirement need to understand that the country they move to may not respect their rights and may actually actively discriminate against them. Latin America, sadly, has a reputation as a part of the world where gay people are treated poorly. Argentina’s move today is a step forward and will undoubtedly help that country attract more gay tourists and expats which will in turn help its economy.

For gay men and women considering moving abroad for retirement, I discuss the challenges you might face in my upcoming e-book. I also have an up-to-date listing of the most popular destinations for expats and each country’s laws concerning homosexual rights.
